A master machinest in Boise City, Oklahoma paid me perhaps the best compliment I have ever received in my 35 years as a professional writer. I was a young reporter for the Boise City News, and I had written a feature article about the man and his ability to work magic with metal. The day following the release of the article, he sat, wordless, in the chair beside my desk, staring at me for a long moment.

"You do with words, what I do with metal," he finally said, and then he left.

I have tried to be worthy of that compliment. As a journalist, free-lance writer, public affairs officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve, and as a successful grant writer (raising over $30 million for various organizations), I have maintained my love of language. I have published one novel, Folsom Boy, now out of print; one biography, Friend of the Hills: The Truman Tucker Story; numerous articles and short stories; and have had five plays produced in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado.

My subject expertise includes: 1) fundraising and nonprofit management (as a Certified Fund Raising Executive); 2) rural development; 3) diversity issues; 4) gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender issues; 5) firefighting (as a volunteer firefighter for seven years); 6) wilderness hiking and horsemanship (as a field certified New Mexico Search and Rescue volunteer); and veteran and military issues.
